UPDATED: Armed standoff in North Kamloops
UPDATE:
The standoff ended peacefully at about 11:20 p.m. after an RCMP negotiator convinced the suspect to leave the home.
Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the 30-year-old suspect had earlier threatened suicide over marital and financial issues, and that's when his wife called police.
Learned also said the initial call to police came in at about 5:45 p.m.
After he surrendered, police searched the man's home and found a number of hunting rifles.
According to Learned, the suspect has no criminal record or history with police.
Learned said charges have not been laid.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Heavily armed police have a house in North Kamloops surrounded tonight (Sept. 8) after an assault suspect apparently holed up with a 22-caliber shotgun.
The incident, at a home on Spruce Avenue near Fortune Drive, is believed to have begun around 7 p.m.
Kamloops RCMP have yet to make a statement, but officers armed with rifles can be seen in the area, including on neighbouring rooftops.
As of 8:45 p.m., Mounties were waiting for the RCMP's emergency response team to arrive, but police are in phone contact with the suspect.
The suspect is a male, but nothing else is known about him at this point.
It's believed he was involved in an assault earlier in the evening. Witnesses to that incident are apparently being interviewed by police at the Kamloops RCMP detachment.
Mounties believe he is alone inside the house, and have apparently confirmed that he has access to firearms.
