When the community gathers in January to celebrate the arts, two awards will be presented for the first time.

The sixth annual Mayor’s Gala for the Arts will honour an emerging artist and business in the arts at the Jan. 19 event.

This year’s event raised more than $30,000, which was shared between Western Canada Theatre, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and the Kamloops Art Gallery. The goal this year is to raise $45,000.

Nomination forms and criteria are available online at the three institutions’ websites (wctlive.ca, kag.bc.ca and kamloopssymphony.com).

Winners will receive the Three Graces sculpture created by local artist Lorel Sternig. The emerging artist category also includes a cash award of $500.

An emerging artist is anyone under the age of 30 who is involved in visual or performing arts.

Deadline for nominations is Friday, Dec. 14 at noon.

Theme for the dinner at the Kamloops Convention Centre is Arabian Nights.

Tickets are $100 and can be ordered until Jan. 14 at the Kamloops Live Box Office, 1025 Lorne St., 250-374-5483,

kamloopslive.ca.
