Fiery truck crash sends driver to RIH
A trucker was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital with serious burns following a fiery collision on the Coquihalla just before midnight on Monday, May 2.
Emergency crews were called to the wreck — near the weigh scales west of Kamloops — at about 11:30 p.m.
Police believe a semi with a very heavy load was travelling slowly on the descent into Kamloops when it was struck from behind by an empty tractor-trailer moving at full highway speed.
The two rigs became locked together before the empty truck’s cab became crushed and burst into flames.
The driver of the crushed truck got out of the vehicle on his own, but not before suffering second- and third-degree burns to his chest.
He was treated by passersby before being rushed to RIH, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
The wreck shut down the highway overnight for three hours.
Police are continuing to investigate the collision. No word yet on charges.
