Saw thief, took action
A man who tried to steal two saws from a North Kamloops garage got more than he bargained for when he was apprehended by the garage owner and his brother.
Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said police were called to the 200-block of Vernon Avenue at 1:20 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, for a reported break-and-enter in progress.
Officers arrived to find a 35-year-old man being held by the two brothers.
Police believe the suspect entered the garage twice — first taking a skill saw and then coming back for a chainsaw.
Learned cautioned homeowners against apprehending burglars.
“For a citizen, you have the absolute legal right to defend your property,” he said.
“But, it’s not advisable. It’s not the safest thing to do.”
The suspect attempted to fight off his captors and was injured in the process, receiving treatment from paramedics following his arrest.
Learned said both stolen saws were recovered and police are recommending a charge of break-and-enter.
