BACK TO SCHOOL: 14,000 students returning to class
Fourteen-thousand students is right where School District 73 needs to be, according to the district’s board of education chairman.
“It’s based on the declining birth rates and the aging demographics,” Ken Christian said.
“I think we’ll be somewhere stable around 14,000.”
Christian said this year’s district enrolment is expected to be down about 200 students from last year.
But, he said, that’s a good thing.
“We’re getting close to being a sustainable size,” he said.
The district’s enrolment peaked in the early 1990s at about 20,000 students.
