Former Kamloops teacher to be sentenced on sex-related charges
A former Kamloops teacher who lost his job in 2004 after engaging in sexual contact with a student will be in court on Dec. 15 to learn when he will be sentenced on new sex-related charges involving two underage girls.
Brett Anthony Nelson, 51, pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court on June 23 to two counts of using a computer to lure a child under the age of 16.
Nelson was to have a sentencing date set on Thursday, Oct. 27, but that matter has been pushed back to Dec. 15.
The offences took place between May 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2010, and involved a pair of 14-year-old Kamloops girls.
The circumstances of the offences have not yet been made public and the victims’ names are protected by a court-ordered publication ban.
In 2004, the B.C. College of Teachers cancelled Nelson’s teaching certificate and terminated his membership after a jury found him guilty of sexual exploitation.
In that instance, he engaged in sexual contact with a Grade 11 student over a period of one month.
The sentencing judge in 2004 granted Nelson a conditional discharge, meaning he has no criminal record despite the jury’s finding of guilt.
Nelson was slated to be sentenced for the new charges in Kamloops last week, but that hearing was adjourned.
