Walmart Supercentre coming to Kamloops?
It’s already one of the biggest retailers in the Tournament Capital — now a major big-box store wants to expand.
The Kamloops Walmart on Hillside Drive is planning to expand by about a fifth in size and has an application at city hall.
Randy Lambright, the city’s planning and development manager, said the retailer wants to increase its footprint by another 19,000 square feet, toward the west of the property near, its automotive section.
However, he’s not sure what Walmart has planned for the space.
Speculation is the store will become a so-called Supercentre, with the addition of full grocery products, including produce.
A year ago this month, Walmart Canada announced plans to open 40 new Supercentres with grocery sections across the country
At the time, Walmart said plans would include the construction of new stores, expansion, remodelling or relocating of existing stores.
The Kamloops Walmart location is currently 130,000 square fee in size.
However, before the store can expand, Walmart will need to get approval from city council.
Lambright explained the development has a covenant restricting the size of the building, which was placed at the time of a public hearing and its initial approval.
While the application to remove the covenant is expected to be in front of council in February, the city’s development department likes what it sees in the application.
“From the city’s perspective, we don’t see an issue with this at this point in time,” Lambright said, noting the expansion is a positive economic sign.
Calls to Walmart’s head office were not returned before KTW press deadline.
