'Nothing suspicious' about Valleyview motel death
There was apparently nothing suspicious about a deadly blaze at a notorious Valleyview motel this morning (Feb. 29).
Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) inspector Sheldon Guertin told KTW police have wrapped up their investigation into the early-morning blaze inside a suite at the Tournament Inn, located at 1893 E. Trans-Canada Hwy.
"The RCMP have handed the investigation back over to us," Guertin said.
"They've concluded that there's nothing suspicious."
Emergency crews were called to the motel at about 8:45 a.m. for a reported fire inside suite No. 26.
The blaze was extinguished within about half an hour, but firefighters located a deceased person inside the suite.
There has been no word yet on the identity of the victim or a cause of death.
A call to the motel from KTW revealed unit 26 has been occupied by an older man and a woman, both of whom have been longtime residents at the motel.
"They are nice people," the Tournament Inn staff member told KTW.
Guertin said KFR investigators will be back at the Tournament Inn tomorrow to continue to look into the blaze.
