Arson suspected in downtown fires
Police and fire investigators are investigating a pair of suspicious fires in the downtown core on Tuesday night (April 10).
According to Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Fran Bethell, emergency crews were first called to a report of a hedge on fire at Ninth Avenue and Columbia Street at about 10:30 p.m.
Before firefighters could begin fighting that blaze, another fire was discovered two blocks away, at 11th and Columbia.
Bethell described both fires as suspicious, and said they were snuffed out before spreading to any structures.
"The homeowners are very fortunate that neither fire spread to any homes or buildings," she said.
Mounties set up a perimeter in downtown Kamloops in an attempt to catch the supposed arsonist, but were unsuccessful.
A police-dog unit was called in as well, but had no luck locating any suspects.
Bethell asked anyone with information to call police at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
