Alleged arsonists 'caught red-handed'
Two men will likely face arson charges after being caught red-handed next to a burning dumpster late last night (May 23), police say.
Kamloops RCMP Const. Bernie Ward said an officer was making patrols in the 400-block of Victoria Street at about 11:30 p.m. when he happened across two men standing in an alley.
The Mountie began talking to the men, and then noticed smoke coming from a nearby dumpster.
"It erupted into flames, and the two males were caught red-handed," Ward said.
Both men — one 18, the other 19 — were arrested on suspicion of arson.
The dumpster fire is the latest in a string of more than 50 suspicious blazes in Kamloops over the last year.
"Kamloops RCMP have made a concerted effort to charge the persons responsible for the rash of set fires," Ward said, urging people to call in if they see any suspicious activity in or around their neighbourhoods.
