Familiar storm on a familiar date

There are reports of condos in Valleyview experiencing flooding as a powerful thunderstorm worked its way through Kamloops on Wednesday, July 26.

The rain was reminiscent of the short but powerful storm that roared through Kamloops exactly one year ago today, on July 26, 2011.

That storm caused a rockslide on Overlanders Bridge and created localized flooding as 10.1 millimetres of rain fell on Victoria Street downtown and 10 millimetres of rain pounded Pacific Way in Aberdeen within a span of just 30 minutes.

Environment Canada classified that storm as a once in a five- or 10-year event for the Tournament Capital.

This storm featured intense downpours that reportedly sent water into condos on Glenwood Drive in Valleyview, created flooding on Highway 1 in Valleyview and filled the underpass at Battle Street and 10th Avenue with water — the same underpass that a year ago saw a car sink into its watery depths.

The storm also produced lightning strikes that may have started a small grass fire in a field near the former Home Hardware store in Aberdeen and thunder that shook buildings in Sahali.
