Neskonlith chief wants charges after bear cub killed 'inhumanely'

The Neskonlith Indian Band is investigating a gruesome alleged attack on a bear cub at a provincial campground, the band chief told KTW.

"We've had an informal report by one of our staff members that a young bear cub was chased down on an ATV and macheted," said Judy Wilson, who had only received initial information and was unclear if the incident took place over the long weekend or more recently.

"We're certainly investigating. We're phoning Parks Canada, we're phoning conservation and we're phoning the RCMP."

The incident is alleged to have taken place at the provincial campground on Niskonlith Lake.

Wilson said she believes the perpetrator was a camper and not one of her band's members.

"We feel this is very inhumane," she said.

"And we'll be pursuing this to the full extent of the law."

Niskonlith Lake is located between Pritchard and Chase, about 65 kilometres east of Kamloops.
