Saudi student returns to court next week
A Saudi Arabian university student will be back in Kamloops provincial court next week to face serious assault charges stemming from a fight that left his friend in a coma with severe brain trauma.
Yousef Mohammed Almotairi has been charged with one count each of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.
Court documents allege the 26-year-old assaulted his friend, Abdulaziz Alhedaib, with a pool cue.
According to police, the assault took place at Cactus Jack's nightclub just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Mounties have said Alhedaib, 28, punched Almotairi, who struck back with a pool cue.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the pool cue went through the victim's eye and penetrated his brain, causing severe trauma.
Almotairi was released the following day after a bail hearing with a justice of the peace. He was ordered to surrender his passport and required to stay in B.C.
Alhedaib remains in critical condition at Royal Inland Hospital. Learned said the man's family is travelling from Saudi Arabia to visit him.
Almotairi is slated to appear in Kamloops provincial court on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
