Number of vehicle break-ins in Kamloops plummets
The number of vehicles being broken into in Kamloops is the lowest it’s been in a decade, according to numbers recently released by the provincial government.
ICBC’s statistics for reported vehicle break-ins show just 89 such incidents in the Tournament Capital in the first half of 2012 — down more than 25 per cent from 2011 and nearly 85 per cent since 2003.
Last year, ICBC received 120 reports of vehicle break-ins in Kamloops between January and June, up from 103 in 2010 and 95 in 2009.
In 2003, there were 569 reports between January and June. The number stayed above the 300-mark until 2008, when it dropped suddenly to 156.
The Kamloops RCMP put in place its prolific-offender management program — which measures thefts from vehicles as one of four major indicators — in 2007.
Merritt also saw a drastic decrease in thefts from vehicles, according to the figures.
In the fist six months of 2012, ICBC received three reports of vehicle break-ins, compared with 14 over the same time the previous year.
