Beware of familiar scam
Kamloops RCMP are once again warning the public of the grandchildren scam.
The ruse involves a call to a senior from someone claiming to be their grandson, who is in trouble and needs money.
The latest incident took place on Dec. 7, but the 74-year-old woman called Mounties rather than send money.
The scammer said he needed $2,500 forwarded via Western Union to a Daniel Cherron from Laval, Que. Police noted the scammer’s phone number — 514-365-3558 — is linked to similar scams involving grandparents being contacted.
Police called the number and a man identifying himself as Richard Steinberg answered. He hung up when he learned he was speaking to a police officer.
Anyone receiving such a phone call is urged to not send money and to report such calls to police.
