Mock hydro bills coming
In addition to their regular water bills, 4,000 Kamloops homes will get something extra in January: Mock bills showing how much they will pay when metered billing begins in April.
The fake bills will only go to those homes where water meters were installed in 2011.
Acting public-works director David Duckworth said they’re meant to give residents a chance to decrease water usage before the rates come into effect.
Duckworth said earlier projections that more than half of customers wouldn’t see a change in their bills are “pretty much bang-on.
“Approximately 60 per cent of properties will pay the same as they pay now or less.”
Less than one per cent of properties will see significantly higher rates, Duckworth said.
Meters have been installed in more than 14,000 homes, with 6,000 left to go.
While no one is paying the metered rate yet, Duckworth said water consumption has been changing since meters were introduced and peak summer usage has dropped by nearly 20 per cent — the city’s 2015 target — already.
