Joey doesn't have to leave home
Joey the Chihuahua is staying put.
Council has overturned its previous decision for a Rosewood Avenue resident who wants to keep three dogs at her home.
Concerns from Shannon Kerr’s next-door neighbours had originally kept council from giving Joey (the most recent addition to the Kerr household) the nod.
But, in an appeal, Kerr said she fenced an additional portion of her property to
keep her dogs from barking near her neighbours’ bedroom window.
While Coun. Nelly Dever called for another public process to decide Joey’s fate — which would give Kerr’s neighbours a chance to return to chambers — council voted to approve the variance.
Mayor Peter Milobar said he didn’t think another process would elicit new information.
“These aren’t rocket-science problems we’re trying to solve here today,” he said.
Council also approved a variance for Schubert Drive resident Carol Bent, who was hoping to keep three dogs and five animals in total at her home.
Council policy calls for no more than four animals per home.
Bent told council two of her dogs are 13 years old and one of her cats is 20.
She said their ages mean her variance
will likely be temporary.
That was enough to convince councillors Tina Lange, Donovan Cavers, Arjun Singh and Pat Wallace, as well as Milobar, to pass a motion in her favour.
