Legacy Games coming to Kamloops
Kamloops will host another summer games in 2013 — but, this event is sticking around permanently.
Beginning next year, the city will become the home of the Kamloops Legacy Performance Games, a multi-sport event for athletes across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
The Games will be run by the Kamloops Sports Council and funded in part using legacy money from the 2011 Western Canada Games.
The first event will feature seven sports, including wheelchair rugby, wrestling and beach volleyball, but Sports Council president Henry Pejril told Kamloops council the event will eventually grow to 18 sports and bring in 2,000 athletes — similar in size to the B.C. Games.
Pejril said the event isn’t meant to compete with or replace provincial and national-level competitions; rather, it will offer competition for high-performance athletes whose team age brackets often don’t jibe with those at other events.
The Kamloops Games can also feature non-Olympic sports that don’t have similar competitions.
The Legacy Performance Games would run every second year after 2014.
In between, the city would host the Legacy Masters Games, which would cater to older competitive athletes.
The first Games are slated to run from June 27 to 30, 2013.
