Police urge caution after random Kamloops stabbing
Police are urging residents of a North Kamloops neighbourhood to be "extra vigilant" while walking in the area after a woman was attacked at random last night (Jan. 11) and stabbed twice.
Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell said the 25-year-old victim was walking with her one-year-old son in the area of Southill Street near the Brocklehurst Cooper's store at about 9 p.m. when she was approached by a man.
Investigators believe the man came up quickly behind the woman, who yelled at him to leave. The woman told police he tried unsuccessfully to take her purse.
The victim felt a pain during the struggle, Bethell said, but did not notice until she got home that she'd been stabbed twice in the arm.
She took a cab to Royal Inland Hospital, where staff alerted police.
Bethell said the woman has since been released from hospital.
"Police are suggesting that the community be extra cautious and extra vigilant when walking in the area at night," she said, urging people to walk in groups, carry cellphones and stay in well-lit areas.
The suspect in last night's stabbing is described as a stocky man standing five-foot-four and wearing all black. The victim said he was wearing a mask over his face.
