Social-planning grant perplexes Lange
Kamloops city council has doled out its annual allotment of social planning grants, but one of this year’s recipients has Coun. Tina Lange perplexed.
Lange questioned a $2,500 grant to the Community Futures Development Corporation of Thompson Country so the organization can plan and host the annual conference of the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets.
“I think any conference in this community that brings money to this community is a good thing,” Lange said.
But, she added, social-planning grants should support the work of nonprofits in the city — not an event for visitors to the area, as the convention’s participants would be.
City recreation supervisor Jennifer Casorso said the conference will promote food security, a key component of the city’s sustainability plan.
Lange was the only councillor to vote against the grant this week.
Coun. Pat Wallace, who sits on the Community Futures board, excused herself from the vote.
The rest of the social-planning grants, which total $72,000, passed unanimously.
They include $3,000 for the Centre for Seniors Information to develop a fraud-awareness program, $3,500 for the Kamloops United Church’s Pit Stop meal program and $13,500 for the Kamloops Food Bank and Outreach Society.
