Big Little Science Centre on the move — again
The Big Little Science Centre is moving again — and it could happen on the second anniversary of the time it moved to its present location.
Gord Stewart, executive director of the facility now housed in six classrooms at the former George Hilliard elementary on the North Shore, said his board is in discussions with administrators with the Kamloops-Thompson school district about the move.
Stewart said the Holt Street school building is needed to consolidate the school district's Twin Rivers Education Centre and Four Directions Storefront, both of which are overseen by one principal and which are in two locations.
Growth of the programs requires the relocation, Stewart said, and discussions are ongoing about relocating the science centre to the former Happyvale elementary school building, which now houses Twin Rivers and is at 655 Holt St. three blocks from the George Hilliard building.
Stewart said discussions involve lease costs and, if the amount is too great to take over the entire building, the option of subleasing parts of it to contain the centre.Stewart is hoping for a longer lease agreement.
If the plan is approved, Stewart said it's likely the centre will move in July, two years after it moved from Bert Edwards elementary into more space at Hilliard.
The science centre was originally located in Westsyde, having been created in 2000 by Kamloops science teacher Gordon Gore.
The centre remains open, with its popular science shows taking place Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
