Cougar spotted near Sun Rivers

According to the Ministry of Environment, here are some tips to consider if you come into contact with one of the cats: If you meet a cougar: • Never approach a cougar. Although cougars will normally avoid a confrontation, all cougars are unpredictable. Cougars feeding on a kill may be dangerous. • Always give a cougar an avenue of escape. • Stay calm. Talk to the cougar in a confident voice. • Pick all children up off the ground immediately. Children frighten easily and their rapid movements may provoke an attack. • Do not run. Try to back away from the cougar slowly. Sudden movement or flight may trigger an instinctive attack. • Do not turn your back on the cougar. Face the cougar and remain upright. • Do all you can to enlarge your image. Don't crouch down or try to hide. Pick up sticks or branches and wave them aboout.

A cougar has been sighted near Sun Rivers and the G&M Trailer Court across Highway 5.

Kamloops Rural RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said a resident on G&M Road on the Tk’emlups Indian Band reserve heard a noise outside his trailer at about 11 p.m. on Wednedsay, Feb. 27.

Upon checking, the resident saw a young cougar outside and said he spotted the same animal at the same location and reported it to management of the trailer park.

The resident said the cougar was, apparently, seen the week before in and around Sun Rivers.

Aird said Mounties want the public to be aware of the animal's presence and ask that any sightings be reported to the local detachment at 250-314-1800 and to the Environment Reporting Line at 1-877-952-7277.
