Rivershore primed for Western

Rivershore-HoleRGBonline.jpg

The Western Championship gets underway on Thursday, June 9, at Rivershore Estate and Golf Links and organizers are looking forward to hearing the ping of the first tee shot.

“After the three months of planning, we’re all happy that it’s happening now,” Tournament director Terry Grimm said.

“We’ll have one good week then we’ll sit down and see how successful we were.”

The action gets underway on Thursday and Friday at 7 a.m. and the last wave of golfers are scheduled to tee off at 11:30 a.m.

Grimm expects golf to be played until about 8 p.m. on both nights.

The first tee shots on Saturday and Sunday will fly through the air sometime between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., depending on the number of golfers who qualify to swing the sticks on the weekend.

Pairings for the first two days of action are posted on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour’s website, cantour.com.

There is a batch of local golfers spectators might be interested in following which includes Dion Sirianni, Adam Gruber, Ryan Krisko, Stephen Connor, Shawn Vanderwal, Shawn Fagan, Chris Power, Ian Henson and Riley Balson of Kamloops, Roger Sloan of Merritt and Mitch Gillis of Williams Lake.

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford is among the favourites to win the whole thing (he is second on the tour’s money list with $23,619), as is Jose de Jesus Rodriguez of Mexico, who is atop the money list with $52,032.

Spectators are asked to park at the B.C. Wildlife Park (9077 Dallas Dr.).

From there they will be shuttled to the course.

Tickets for the Western Championship cost $15 per day or $30 for the whole tourney.

Children under 16 will be admitted free with an accompanying adult.

Tickets can be bought at the gate or at Kamloops Rotary Club locations around the city.

Environment Canada predicts a mix of sun and cloud and temperatures to hover in the low- to mid-20s for the duration of the tournament, except for Friday, when clouds will bring with them a 60 per cent chance of showers.

Members of the gallery will be able to chow down at Rivershore’s clubhouse and at the snack shack on Hole 6.

Anyone interested in volunteering can email westernchampionship@rivershoregolflinks.com.
