Kamloops to host figure skating nationals
Chalk up another W for the Tournament Capital.
Kamloops will host the 2013 Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships in April.
“With the strength of the Valleyview Skating Club, paired with the city’s great two-sheet facility, this event will see the skating community working together to put Kamloops on the figure-skating map,” Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar said.
Both the Olympic- and NHL-size ice surfaces at McArthur Island Sports Centre will be used to host the event, which will feature about 700 of the nation’s best figure skaters.
The River City was recently awarded first rights to the 2014 Under 23 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships, an International Association of Athletics Federations-sanctioned track and field event.
Athletics Canada offered Kamloops first rights to the NACAC championships after turning away the city’s bid for the 2015 Pan American junior track and field championships.
Edmonton will host the Pan Am junior meet.
City and Tourism Kamloops staff introduced Skate Canada representatives to the McArthur Island facility and local accommodations in April.
“We are excited to be heading to Kamloops for this event and we are sure the experience the city and the venue will give our adult skaters will be top notch,” said William Thompson, Skate Canada CEO.
