Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops threw 20.49 metres on his final throw to qualify for the men's shot-put final at the Summer Olympic Games in London early Friday morning.

Justin Rodhe, who trains with Armstrong in the River City, fouled on all three throws and did not qualify.

Many held their breath as Armstrong heaved his final throw.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound athlete threw well below the qualifying standard on his first throw and fouled on his second before reaching the mark on his third.

He heads into the final ranked seventh of 12.

Reese Hoffa of the U.S. led all qualifiers with a throw of 21.36 metres.

David Storl of Germany and Tomasz Majewski of Poland also threw over 21 metres.

The final gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
