Classics win home meet

The Kamloops Classic Swimming club hosted and won the 20th annual MJB Law Classic Invitational, which wrapped up on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

Highlighting the Classics' results was Colin Gilbert, who set five new club records — in the 200m fly, 50m fly, 1,500m freestyle, 100m fly and 400m freestyle. Gilbert won every event he entered except the 1,500m free.

In the 14-and-under boys' division, Carel Ackermann set three new club records and won the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events. His times were good enough to qualify for the Speedo Western Canadian Championships in February in Saskatoon.

Three Kamloops swimmers — Megan Dalke, Gabrielle Dagasso and Makena Sutherland —  fared well in the 14-and-under girls' division.

Dalke set club records in the 800m freestyle and 200m individual medley. She also won the 200m and 400m freestyle and individual medley events.

Dagasso won the 50m fly and 100m fly events, setting club records in the process. She achieved the qualifying standard required to compete at Westerns.

Sutherland set a new club record in the 50m backstroke event.

Dylana Milobar set two new club records in the 50m and 100m backstroke in the 15-and-over girls' division, but just missed the qualifying standards required to reach the 2013 senior national championships — which double as a qualification meet for the 2013 world championships. She won the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events on the weekend.

Cohen Freeze, competing in the 10-and-under boys' division, won the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events. He qualified for the provincial AA championships in Surrey in February.

In the 15-and-over boys' division, Ben Branchflower won the 50m fly category and achieved the qualifying time required for the 2013 Canadian Age Group Championships in July in Montreal.

Logan MacLeod qualified for Westerns in the 50m backstroke.

Sarah Koopmans placed second in the 50m fly and set a 10-and-under girls' club record. Trevor Laupland placed second in the 100m backstroke and third in the 50m fly, while Gursevak Uppal finished third in the 50m Breaststroke in 10-and-under action.

Lauren Carlson, competing in the 12-year-old girls' division, achieved a qualifying time for AA provincials in the 100m freestyle.

The Classics' 13- and 14-year old boys' relay team, comprised of Gilbert, Ackermann, MacLeod and Ethan Phillips set new records in the 200m freestyle relay and 200m medley relay races.

In total, the Classics won 58 medals at the meet, which was attended by 560 swimmers from clubs across B.C. and Alberta.
