Blazers win, acquire Kessy
The Kamloops Blazers picked up a win and a new piece of the puzzle in Vancouver on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
After the Blazers downed the Giants 4-2 at Pacific Coliseum, news spilled into the Twitterverse that Kamloops had acquired 20-year-old forward Kale Kessy from Vancouver in exchange for 18-year-old forward Rob Trzonkowski and a fifth-round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.
The news was shortly thereafter confirmed by the Blazers.
Kessy has racked up nine goals, 18 points and 62 penalty minutes in 29 games this season.
In 222 career WHL games, Kessy has 34 goals, 87 points and 467 sin-bin minutes.
He has played in 28 WHL playoff games.
The Phoenix Coyotes draft pick was a Medicine Hat Tiger from 2008 until he was traded to Vancouver earlier this season.
“Kale is a big-bodied forward that will make us a tougher group to play against,” Blazer GM Craig Bonner said in a press release.
“We were in a position to add a 20-year-old and felt that Kale was the best fit available for our team moving forward.”
There are 23 players on the Blazers' roster, including 13 forwards, eight defencemen and two goaltenders.
Scoring for the Blazers on Wednesday were Joel Edmundson, Dylan Willick, Tim Bozon and Chase Souto.
Taran Kozun made 20 saves and posted the win in net for Kamloops.
Blake Orban and Trevor Cheek scored for the Giants, who went with Tyler Fuhr between the pipes.
Next up for Kamloops are the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, Jan. 4, at Interior Savings Centre.
The game will be Kessy's first as a Blazer.
