British Columbia mayors are donning hats of a different sort — ball caps — in a friendly competition over West Coast League baseball.

The new BC Cup will see a trophy awarded to the mayor of the B.C. community that wins the West Coast League baseball league regular season play, which consists of 18 games.

The new Kamloops NorthPaws team — which is set to host its home-opener game on May 31 against the Edmonton Riverhawks at Norbrock Statidum — is part of that league, along with the Kelowna Falcons, Victoria HarbourCats and Nanaimo NightOwls.

“The Kamloops NorthPaws and the Mayor’s Office in Kamloops are excited about baseball in B.C. and another chance to show why Kamloops is Canada’s Tournament Capital,” Mayor Ken Christian said in a press release.
