The Northern Lights dance above Kamloops on March 23, 2023.

KTW reader Tyler Wilson shared this striking photo he took of the Northern Lights over Kamloops.

Wilson positioned himself in Rose Hill on the night of March 23 and pointed his camera north. What he captured was an awe-inspiring image of the Aurora Borealis.

According to space.com, for all the beauty of the Northern Lights, their creation is a rather violent event. Energized particles from the sun slam into Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 72-million km/h, but our planet’s magnetic field protects us from the onslaught. As Earth’s magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles — there are Southern Lights, too — the dramatic process transforms into a cinematic atmospheric phenomenon.
