The KTW Christmas Cheer Fund will this year get a boost from the Kamloops Last Week Charity Pickleball Challenge, which will get underway at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, on the basketball courts in front of the Old Main building at Thompson Rivers University.
KLW sponsors McDonald’s (Brandy Sekhon), Volkswagen of Kamloops (Terry Lowe), Gord’s Appliance and Mattress Centre (Steve Rodgers) and KTW (Robert Doull) have generously supplied prizes and refreshments, which will be handed out at the event.
Admission is by donation. We will drop your name into the #LastWeekClique prize-draw bucket upon payment. Help us with our attendance estimate by accepting an invite on the Facebook event page.
Those who cannot attend but wish to donate can E-transfer funds to billing@kamloopsthisweek.com. Note in the message box the funds are for the KLW Charity Pickleball Challenge.
See the list below for prize information and email klw@kamloopsthisweek.com if you wish to donate to the prize pot.
A few months back on the show, KLW co-hosts Chris Foulds and Marty Hastings issued a pickleball challenge to the uber-confident (some would say cocky) Volkswagen of Kamloops team of Lowe, Tara Holmes and Franca Petrucci.
The best-of three match was scheduled and we decided to turn it into a charity event — the inaugural KLW Charity Pickleball Challenge.
Come out, watch the grudge match, win prizes and raise money for the fund.
We know folks are busy, so the event will not run long. We intend to start the match at about 6:20 p.m. and wrap the event at about 7:30 p.m., after the game and prize draws are complete. Feel free to mingle and offer KLW show feedback until 8 p.m.
Each year, the KTW Christmas Cheer Fund raises money for between three and five local organizations.
The Y Women’s Emergency Shelter is a recipient every year at the request of Gregg Drinnan, who in 2001 started the fund at the Kamloops Daily News.
KTW took over operation of the Cheer Fund in 2014.
Last year, the five groups included the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter, Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association, Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism, Kamloops branch of the BC SPCA and Kamloops Brain Injury Association.
The 2022 Cheer Fund raised about $50,000. Recipients in 2023 will be determined later this year.
Magic Mike Miltimore and the Lee’s Music/Riversong Guitars crew will this year provide tunes and help out with MC duties, along with Holmes.
McDonald’s will bring refreshments and chicken nuggets. TRU offered the court booking free of charge.
Thanks to Kaitlin Vander Wal and Lee Malbeuf for designing our KLW Charity Pickleball Challenge logo.
