Kamloops Daybreak Rotary Ribfest draws acclaimed ribbers to Riverside Park and raises money for community organizations.

Kamloops Daybreak Rotary Ribfest returns to Riverside Park this weekend following two years of pandemic-related cancellations.

This year will mark the 10th annual event, returning from the pandemic in full force, along with the Hot Nite in the City car show, the dragon boat festival and, of course, a variety of barbecue temptations from six vendors.

Ribbers attending this year’s event include Boss Hog’s, Gator BBQ, House of Q, Grizzly BBQ, Prairie Smoke and Spice and Smoke Dem Bones BBQ.

Sustainability is also on organizers’ minds and the event will be a zero-waste undertaking, with materials being upcycled, recycled or composted.

Spokesperson Bryce Herman said the goal is to create the first zero-waste event in the city.

“We’re pretty excited and we think we can achieve it,” Herman said, noting work already done by the sustainability team. He said vendors were asked to provide compostable and recyclable materials this year, with everything that comes in and out of the park being sustainable in some way.

Ribfest will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day from Friday, Aug. 5, to Sunday, Aug. 7.

The layout has changed slightly this year, Herman said, due to construction underway within the park. Herman said the changes, however, are for the better.

“It means the beverage garden is going to be larger and it’s going to be right in front of the main stage,” he said.

The main stage will host entertainment throughout the event, with daily entertainment from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Artists include three tribute bands honouring popular and classic acts, including Reckless (a Bryan Adams tribute) on Friday, OC/DC (AC/DC tribute) on Saturday and Fleetwood Magic (Fleetwood Mac tribute) on Sunday. Tribute bands will take to the stage at 8 p.m.

Other acts taking the stage include Some Band, InVerse, Someone to Blame, Golden Blackout, Chapter 9, Paisley Groove and Full of Excuses.

Special transportation considerations have also been made this year for Ribfest.

The City of Kamloops has made transit free for the weekend and a bicycle valet will be operated by District Bicycle, with security onsite and overnight storage available.

Ribfest is held to raise money for various Kamloops organizations, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to various causes.

Since 2012, Ribfest has helped numerous groups, including Literacy Kamloops, BGC Kamloops, Power Start Breakfast Program, Breakfast for Babies in support of the Kamloops Food Bank, TRU scholarships, Kamloops Girl Guides, Toys for Kids Breakfast, SKSS field hockey team, Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre, Kamloops Minor Baseball Association, Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House, YMCA/YWCA Strong Kids Program, Junior Achievement and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region.
