A lady in front of us appeared to be in some distress, as she was told the company could not accept a cheque for payment of shipping.
She tearfully told the clerk her dad had recently died and she needed to send the presents to her family at this poignant time.
My Christmas spirit and empathy came into play. I hardly ever carried cash but, on this day, I had a fair amount on me, so I stepped forward and said I would pay the cost for her.
I’ll never forget her expression of thankfulness, as she assured me she would pay me back.
A few days later a package was delivered to me, it included a lovely handmade gift and a cheque covering the postage.
I never told her where I lived or worked, but she took the time to find out and returned the Christmas spirit and trust.
