The Kamloops Arts Council has named its new executive director.

Tanya Nielsen has taken the reigns of the arts organization, which has a mandate to take the arts out into the community by offering no-cost programs, performances, workshops and events.

Former executive director Terri Hadwin left her post at the end of May after taking the role in 2019.

Nielsen says she's a writer, painter, photographer, baker, researcher and curator.

She graduated from Thompson Rivers University with a bachelor of fine arts degree and worked for five years in conference and event management. For the past three years, Nielsen has been working for the Quesnel Art Gallery in various roles.

"Throughout my education and career, I have learned that it takes great people, hard work, a lot of time, and art that speaks to a community, to make a great arts organization. I am excited to be joining an arts council that is just that, in Kamloops," she said.
