Kamloops Symphony set to finish season with local talent

The Kamloops Symphony Orchestra will cap off its 2020-2021 season with one last performance, set to debut on May 21.

T(w)o New Heights will be the orchestra's ninth concert of a season where a certain amount of innovation was necessary. Like previous concerts this season, it will debut online and be available on-demand until June 19.

The concert will open with Le bal masqué, a "highly entertaining" piece by composer Francis Poulenc, to be performed by Kamloops' Alan Corbishley.

Following that performance will be a piece by Canadian composer Katia Makdissi-Warren called Whispers of the Mountain, where musicians will recreate the sounds of nature. Secwepemc artist Csetkwe will perform with the orchestra, using her voice and drums, and also collaborated in creating the piece.

Kamloops-born composer Stacey Brown is behind the third part of the concert, with Still, which takes inspiration from the physicality of breathing. The piece is the first instalment of a multi-year commissioning project by the KSO called Minutes to Midnight, which will explore global issues of our time.

The concert will conclude with work from Aaron Copeland's Appalachian Spring.

Tickets are $15 each or $25 for a household pass, available starting May 17. A special COVID price is also available for those enduring pandemic-related hardships. They can be purchased at the Kamloops Live box office, 250-374-5483 or online at kamloopslive.ca.
