Charges laid after robbery, carjacking incidents in Kamloops

A purse-snatching downtown on Victoria Street was followed by an attempted theft of a vehicle in Riverside Park, according to police.

A Kamloops man is facing robbery, assault and weapons charges following a report of a purse-snatching that escalated into a report of an attempted carjacking in Riverside Park. 

On Wednesday (Sept. 1) at 3:40 p.m., Kamloops Mounties received a report of a man who had stolen a purse from a woman in the 100-block of Victoria Street downtown and ran away.

A passerby chased a man into Riverside Park and intervened as the suspect attempted to steal a vehicle.

Police arrived and arrested a man and collected evidence on scene.

“This suspect currently remains in custody pending a future court appearance and we are fortunate the public was not seriously injured,” Kamloops RCMP Insp. Jeff Pelley said in a release. 

 David Edward Nicholson, 31, is charged with two counts of robbery and one count each of assault with a weapon and possess a weapon for dangerous purpose. He was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 14.
