COVID-19 update: 4,997 new cases, 24 deaths, more in hospital over weekend

B.C. is reporting 24 deaths, another significant increase in hospitalizations and 4,997 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 72 hours.

Most of the new cases occurred in the Fraser Health region, with 1,702 reported over the three-day weekend reporting period. Interior Health had the second most new cases, adding 1,251 to its tally.

Interior Health has the third-most active cases in the province with 7,021, behind Fraser Health (14,431) and Vancouver Coastal Health (7,256).

Fraser Health also saw the bulk of the deaths reported over the weekend, with 18. One death was reported on Interior Health.

Hospitalizations have gone up by 63 since last report, with 987 patients and 129 of those patients in ICUs.

As of Monday, vaccination rates among those age 12 and older were reported at 92.6 per cent for at least one dose, at 89.9 per cent for at least two doses, and 40.4 per cent for at least three doses. Those under age 18 are not eligible for the third (booster) dose.

Of the 14,382 cases recorded from Jan. 14 to Jan. 20, 28.5 per cent were among people not fully vaccinated, while from Jan. 7 to Jan. 20, 30.6 per cent of the 1,256 hospitalizations reported were among the same group.
