One person is believed to have died following a fire at a residence in the 1200-block of Hook Road in the Monte Creek area east of Kamloops.
Tk'emlups Rural RCMP received a report of a fire at about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night (June 8). The Pritchard volunteer fire department also attended the scene.
Police are currently holding the scene while the BC Coroners Service investigates, according to Kamloops RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn.
Evelyn said at this time, no criminality is suspected.
Photos posted to social media show a residence fully engulfed in flames.
The area is not within a fire protection area.
Thompson-Nicola Regional District fire protection services manager Jason Tomlin said the area where the fire occurred — near the Highway 97 turnoff to Vernon from Highway 1 — is in between the City of Kamloops and the Pritchard fire protection area, which is farther east of where the fire occurred.
"Pritchard did respond and we have a policy where our TNRD fire departments can potentially leave their fire protection area if they follow the policy and procedure we have in place,” Tomlin told KTW. “That did happen and they did respond to help assist.”
Fire investigators, the BC Coroners Service and RCMP were still on scene as of noon on Wednesday.
