Kamloops council has put its weight behind support for professional news media.

City council has voted unanimously to support a motion by Coun. Dale Bass, which endorses legislation by the federal government to support and rejuvenate news outlets across Canada and urges the federal government to move quickly to ensure a healthy news media to serve Canadians.

Bass is a former longtime newspaper journalist, who worked for Kamloops This Week prior to becoming a civic politician.

Bass earlier told KTW the government has given support for other industries and that the news media industry was struggling prior to the pandemic and in need of government support.

Bass said the motion is part of a national movement afoot for municipalities to pass similar motions and encourage government to act.
