Police talk man off bridge in Savona

Highway 1 was closed prior to man suffering from a mental-health crisis being taken to hospital

A man experiencing a mental-health episode on the Savona River Bridge west of Kamloops on Tuesday (July led to the closure of Highway 1 in both directions while police diffused the situation.

At about 6:30 p.m. the Tk’emlúps RCMP rural detachment responded to a report of a man experiencing a mental-health crisis on the bridge and closed the area in both directions while they attempted to speak with the man, Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a release.

Additional RCMP resources were deployed to assist, along with the BC Conservation Officer Service jet boat, but police on scene were able to convince the man to surrender before those additional units arrived.

The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and immediately taken to Royal Inland Hospital for medical assessment and care.

No charges are being recommended.

The highway reopened to traffic shortly after he was taken into custody.
