The Kamloops Y Dream Home Lottery set a record this week by selling all 18,000 tickets and all 32,000 50/50 tickets in two days. Last year, all tickets for the grand prize home sold out in 12 days, while it took 10 days in 2019 for all tickets to be scooped up.
Tickets for the 2021 lottery went on sale on Tuesday, May 4, at 9 a.m. and demand was so great that the website, at ydreamhome.ca, crashed for a short time. As of Thursday, May 6, at 1:30 p.m., all tickets — lottery and 50/50 — had been sold.
“We can't believe we are actually saying this already, but Dream Home AND 50/50 tickets are sold out! What a way to celebrate our 25th anniversary!” was the message posted to the lottery’s Facebook page. “This is truly incredible, we have never before experienced this kind of response to the Dream Home Lottery, and we sincerely cannot thank you enough for your support. The Kamloops Y relies on this lottery to fund our programs and services, and your community thanks you for your kindness and generosity! We couldn't do this without YOU, so thank you for helping us continue to build a healthy community in Kamloops!”
Ticket sales began about a month later than usual this year, due to pandemic-related delays in finishing the $720,000 home at 105-2575 Elston Dr. in Westsyde.
The Y Dream Home is the grand prize in the annual lottery that also features hundreds of secondary prizes. The home is built via a partnership between the Canadian Home Builders' Association and Thompson Rivers University's School of Trades.
The 2,800-square-foot, two-storey house was designed by Ivory Winston of Procad Designs Ltd. and the interior designer was Deanne Roberts of Fine & Dandy Interiors. The house style is contemporary craftsman. CHBA-CI builder Tom Eggers of Chimera Construction Ltd. was project manager, with various CHBA-CI members chipping in with product and labour support.
The lottery also has a 50/50 draw component, with the pot being split between the winner and the Y.
Last year, it took 12 days to sell all 17,000 tickets. In 2019, all tickets were sold within 10 days of going on sale. Last year's $700,000 home in Orchards Walk in Valleyview was won by Nicole Larsen.
Draws for prizes will take place on June 30, beginning at 9 a.m.
