Man in critical condition after police use Taser following chase from Okanagan to Shuswap

A man is in critical condition after being hit with a Taser following a police chase that ended early Monday morning near Sicamous, Mounties say.

Police said the incident began at about 1:30 a.m. Monday in Lake Country, when a vehicle was reported to have been driving erratically. Police caught up with the driver in Armstrong, but he is alleged to have fled.

The vehicle was pulled over in Sicamous but fled again, police said.

“The driver and vehicle were later located and stopped in Malawi,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Janell Shoihet said.

“When officers attempted to take the man into custody, he allegedly resisted.”

Shoihet said police used a conducted-energy weapon on the man, at which time he went into medical distress.

He remains in critical condition in hospital, and the Independent Investigations Office, B.C.’s police watchdog, is now investigating.

Shoihet said a concurrent RCMP investigation is also taking place.
