Olivia, Liam lead the baby name race in B.C. in 2020

The past decade has been dominated by Olivia (most popular name for girls eight of 10 years) and Liam (most popular name for boys five of 10 years).

Don’t be surprised to meet even more Olivias in the years to come.

For the fifth straight year, and for the ninth time in the past 11 years, Olivia is the most popular name among babies born in B.C. to the end of Dec. 17. The most popular name among baby boys born in 2020 is Liam, which has been the most chosen male monicker for five of the past 11 years.

Overall in 2020, Olivia is followed by Liam, Oliver, Noah, Lucas, Emma, Theodore, Benjamin, Ethan and Charlotte, according to the Vital Statistics Agency's preliminary figures from Jan. 1 to Dec. 17.

In 2019, Olivia was the top choice for babies born in B.C., followed by Oliver, Liam, Lucas, Ethan, Noah, William, Benjamin, Charlotte and Theodore

Only names that occur five or more times are listed.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 28, 40,426 babies were born in B.C. In 2019, 43,703 babies were born in B.C.

The past decade has been dominated on the girls’ side by Olivia and on the boys’ side by Liam.

The most popular name for boys born in B.C. this past decade:

• 2019: Lucas (through Dec. 17)

• 2018: Liam

• 2017: Benjamin

• 2016: Lucas

• 2015: Oliver

• 2014: Liam

• 2013: Liam

• 2012: Ethan

• 2011: Liam

• 2010: Jacob

The most popular name for girls born in B.C. this past decade:

• 2019: Olivia (through Dec. 17)

• 2018: Olivia

• 2017: Olivia

• 2016: Olivia

• 2015: Emma

• 2014: Olivia

• 2013: Olivia

• 2012: Olivia

• 2011: Emma

• 2010: Olivia

Those names are in stark contrast to baby names handed out in the province in the past.

A century ago, in 1920, the five most popular names for baby boys were John, William, Robert, James and George. The five most popular names for baby girls in 1920 were Margaret. Mary, Dorothy, Kathleen and Florence.

Fifty years ago, in 1970, the five most popular names for baby boys were Michael, David, Robert, Jason and James. The five most popular names for baby girls in 1970 were Lisa, Michelle, Jennifer, Tracy and Karen.

Of those popular names a half-century and a century ago, only William cracked the top 10 list in 2019.
