According to freelance photographer Nathan Ritchie, residents strung together garden hoses to fight the flames amid windy conditions until Kamloops Fire Rescue personnel arrived.

As of 9 p.m., it appeared the fire had been doused, with firefighters making sure hot spots were extinguished.

There is no word yet on the cause of the sudden and short-lived blaze next to Highway 1, which appears to have started in the school’s field and spread from there.
