Sahali robbery suspect arrested following police response in Southgate area

Police responded to the Southgate area in Sahali in search of the suspect who is now in police custody.

The suspect in an armed robbery near Aberdeen Mall on Monday (April 19) was arrested shortly afterwards at the Star Lodge on West Columbia Street.

Kamloops Mounties received word that at about 12:45 p.m. a man allegedly entered a retail store in the 1300-block of West Tran Canada Highway with a firearm and stole merchandise. The suspect was spotted fleeing on foot about two kilometres away near Laval Crescent and Notre Dame Drive.

The nearby Beattie elementary school was placed on a hold and secure procedure while police searched the area.

RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn said multiple officers and the police dog unit responded and tracked a suspect back to the Star Lodge on Columbia Street West.

A man known to police was arrested for the theft, and for unendorsed warrants.

Police seized a BB gun in the process, and their investigation is ongoing.

“Any use of a firearm in a criminal offence, including one that turns out to be an imitation firearm, is extremely concerning and presents a very high-risk to police and the general public,” Evelyn said in a police press release.

Anyone who may have witnessed the robbery or has any information related to the incident is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2021-12331.
