A Salmon Arm man died and several others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Coquihalla Highway on Thursday.
The crash happened before 5:30 p.m. in the northbound side of the highway on Larson Hill between Hope and Merritt, near Coldwater Road, south of Exit 290. Drivers on the route reported heavy rain at the time of the accident.
Merritt RCMP said a small car collided with a northbound commercial vehicle. This collision resulted in no injuries and those involved were exchanging information at the roadside.
Two more vehicles approached the scene, causing a chain reaction of collisions.
The driver and passenger from the initial collision were standing at the side of the road and were seriously injured. Both were flown by BC Air Ambulance to a local hospital.
A 47-year-old Salmon Arm man who stopped to offer assistance was pronounced dead at the scenes, while several other vehicle passengers were treated at scene for their injuries.
The highway was closed for several hours, until at least 1 a.m., as emergency crews cleared the scene.
The crash occurred just ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend — a time police say can be especially busy and dangerous on B.C. highways.
In 2017, 540 people were injured in 2,300 crashes in B.C. over the May long weekend.
