The thunderstorm rolling through Kamloops on Saturday evening has featured countless lightning strikes and rumbling thunder, with fires sparked in the area.
There was a fire in the Lac du Bois hills above Brocklehurst as of 7:30 p.m., with flames visible from across Kamloops. Another blaze started in the hills above Lafarge, across the South Thompson River from Barnhartvale.
The storm is also bringing rain, which may help with firefighting efforts.
In addition, there were reports that lightning struck a house on Stagecoach Drive in Batchelor Heights.. A photo on Twitter, however, showed a firefighter on the roof of a home in the 900-block earlier in the evening. The roof appeared to be damaged and a small fire was doused.
The storm also led to an hour-plus delay of the BC Football Conference game at Hillside Stadium between the Kamloops Broncos and Westshore Rebels. The game started at 6 p.m., was delayed by lightning, and resumed at about 8:30 p.m.
The thunderstorm was forecast by Environment Canada, which issued a warning before the storm moved into Kamloops from along Highway 5A to the south.
