A semi-trailer carrying a load of cherries caught fire on the Coquihalla Highway south of Kamloops, leading to the closure of the northbound lanes of the highway, which remained impassable as of 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Kamloops Mounties are helping Kamloops firefighters at the scene, which is just south of the Highway 1 exit to Tobiano and Savona.
Drives coming from Merritt toward Kamloops on the Coquihalla can choose to detour via Lac Le Jeune Road.
Kamloops Fire Rescue expects the highway’s northbound lanes to re-open by about 7:30 p.m.
The southbound lanes of the Coquihalla remain open.
