Valleyview secondary to get expansion funding

Education Minister Rob Fleming will be at the school on Friday afternoon to reveal details of the multi-million-dollar project

Valleyview secondary will likely receive good news this Friday as Education Minister Rob Fleming will be at the school for a funding announcement.

Ministry spokesperson Sean Leslie confirmed Fleming will be in Kamloops on Friday, but wouldn’t divulge any further details pertaining to where or why he will be in town, noting an advisory will be issued on Thursday.

KTW has learned, however, that Fleming will be at the school on 1950 Valleyview Dr. at 2 p.m. on Friday to announce provincial funding for expansion at the overcrowded facility.

“It will be very exciting,” Leslie said of the announcement.

School District 73 submitted a project definition report to the ministry last fall.

It’s unclear if the announcement will be for an addition to the existing school or a new facility entirely — which was an option the school district was asked to provide in its report.

Valleyview secondary is over-capacity, operating with nine portables around the main building this school year. Another five portables are pending in SD73’s long range facilities report.

There are 942 students attending the school in east Kamloops this year, but the facility is operating at 140 per cent capacity as it was built to accommodate 675 students, per the Ministry of Education’s calculation.

SD73 projects Valleyview to be at 163 per cent capacity within the next five years without expansion.

The announcement is coming about a year after the ministry asked SD73 to submit a detailed project plan.

The school district has estimated expansion of Valleyview secondary will cost between $24 million and $34 million.
