Original story:

A water rescue call to Pioneer Park just east of downtown Kamloops on Friday afternoon involves police dealing with a teen who apparently ran from Mounties earlier in the day.

Mounties and firefighters are on the South Thompson River in rescue boats and on the shoreline on both sides of the waterway in Valleyview.

The teen they are seeking is standing on a rowboat, floating west. As of 2 p.m., he was standing in the rowboat near Riverland Motel, at times holding aloft what appears to be a hammer and at other times looking down at his cellphone.

“Kamloops RCMP is currently engaged with a male on the river whose state of mind remains unclear,” Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Mathias Van Laer said. “The male ran from police from an earlier incident. He then stole a row boat found off the dock of a riverfront residence in Valleyview.:

Van Laer said an RCMP boat is on the water and officers are maintaining contact with the male, while other units are lining up on both shores of the river.

Kamloops Fire Rescue was also supporting police effort with its own vessel on the water in the area.

Editor's note: Photos of the male showing his face have been removed from this story once KTW learned he was under 18.
