Wildfire near Merritt grows to 28 hectares as of July 21

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to the Skuhun Creek fire, located along Highway 8 near the Shackan Indian Band, with 63 firefighters, alongside two helicopters bucketing water. It is one of only four wildfires burning in B.C.

A wildfire burning between Merritt and Spences Bridge has grown to 28 hectares in size as of Tuesday evening.

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to the Skuhun Creek fire, located along Highway 8 near the Shackan Indian Band, with 63 firefighters, alongside two helicopters bucketing water.

As of 9 p.m. on July 21, the fire was burning in steep and rocky terrain and listed as out of control.

Ground crews were pumping water to cool and further suppress the fire and digging a trench line ahead of the blaze to remove available fuel.

No structures have thus far been threatened, according to the wildfire service.

The cause of the fire, which was discovered on Monday, is not yet known.

There are four active wildfires in B.C. as of July 21, with the Skuhun Creek blaze being the largest.
